Supporters are being asked to stand with Tim and Jo-An Ladouceur at 8am on July 13th, at 21 Shebeshong Rd. to prevent their eviction. No Band Members should be evicted in the midst of a pandemic and housing crisis. Band Council should meet with members to discuss their issues. Sign the Petition! to show your support.
Stand with Tim and Jo-An!
Tim Ladouceur is a Shawanaga Band Member who is facing an unjust eviction from his home. Tim and his wife Jo-An have been living in the house at 21 Shebeshekong Rd. for the past 8.5 years and were brought here by former Chief Wayne Pamajewon.
When they moved in, the place was a total disaster – covered in mold, lacking proper plumbing, heating and insulation and no hydro or running water. They nearly died that first month living in their non-winterized camper in -21 weather. They alone, with no help from the landlord or SFN were forced to replumb and rewire the house if they wanted to survive the winter. The yard was a complete disaster and junkyard. They cleaned the place up, and built a farm to provide for themselves. They put tens of thousands of dollars in labor, material and resources into fixing up the place with no assistance from SFN given.
Now Band Council is trying to throw Tim and Jo-An out of their home, on the basis of faulty and incorrect information and a vendetta from the former Chief. The Chief and Council have refused to enter into Dispute Resolution under Shawanaga’s own Land Code. The Seven Grandfather teachings include the saying, “It is better to lose with honesty than succeed with fraud.” The Band Council has not honoured this teaching. Tim and Jo-An are both disabled and do not have the strength to start all over from scratch without assistance.
Band members should not be made homeless by the Chief and Council. Tim and Jo-An are willing to move if the Chief and Council will provide them with a three acre lot in which to farm and help to move their property to the new location. They have asked for assistance to resolve this matter, but so far the newly elected Chief and Council are refusing to meet with them or to reply to any of their correspondence. It is only right that Band Members have an allotment of land since our current Chief has a 5 acre Certificate of Possession and the former Chief occupies 3 different lots. They have offered to purchase the home they are in several times, as recently as May 18, 2021 and they have still not received a response.
On the morning of July 13th, a sheriff will be coming to attempt to forcefully evict Tim and Jo-An from their home. Stand with Tim and Jo-An and join us at their home at 8am July 13th to demand a negotiated settlement and a meeting with Chief and Council. We need houses and land for Shawanaga members, not evictions and discrimination!
